Home Energy Ratings: MPG for Our Homes

A home is usually the single most important and expensive purchase of our lifetime. But, we really don’t get a lot of information about the systems of our homes when we purchase them. Sure, we see what type of countertop and flooring is in there. We sometimes get some information about the appliances. But we rarely get accurate information about how well a home is insulated or how the heating system performs.

Imagine a day when you could see the energy performance of your home before you buy it. What if there was a label, like the one you get on a new car, that could help you see how much it would cost to heat and power your home. You could compare different houses – and their energy bills! Oh, what a wondrous day that would be.

Would you believe me if I said that day is here, at least for new homes? Home Energy Ratings provide a numerical, comprehensive rating for a home’s energy performance. Taking into account insulation, sealing details, windows, doors, and mechanical systems, a Home Energy Rating lets you know how your home will perform in terms of energy.
